Interview prior to exhibiting at FloatArt

What are your plans for the future?

My biggest wish is to make my living from my art. I’m the type of artist that cannot work part time very well, I like to be fully devoted to my art, working double shifts every day. But for me, art never sounded like having a job, it’s completely a joy.

How do you think the transition from art school to the ‘art world’ will affect your future profects/ creative output?

I try to keep my flow in art protected from the market. I like to produce what I want, when I want. I’m not good in taking commissions. I’ve been working over summer to make a living from my art, and this transition has not been easy. But I’ve been learning a lot, and investing my savings in my art studio. I’m starting to see some results, and I hope it gets better.

Where do you position yourself in relation to the current art market/world?
 As a Sole-Trader indeed.

I’m an artist and a business man, and in the university we learn not much about business. That’s why my final dissertation topic was “How to make a living from your art”: I wanted to find a solution in the contemporary equation of making a living from art. Where a lot of power shifted to internet, but also a lot more of amateur artists and opportunistis, what confuses the consumer/art collector.

Do you have any concerns about selling your work?

I’ve been learning to start valuing my work initially for £0.25 per square inch, what is very affordable and makes my living from art possible.

Whoever wants to pay less than that, I learnt to distinguish as ‘not my audience’. And I learnt that it’s rather better to throw away the unsold ones than sell cheaper. I’ve to stand by myself, otherwise nobody will.
