WORKING TOGETHER FOR BETTER BREAST CANCER AFTERCARE –
Helping patients with art and money!
AKTion gegen Krebs (Action Against Cancer) is a project founded by Sandra, a breast cancer patient herself, which sells art to raise money.
This is how we give women access to important aftercare examinations that aren’t covered by insurance.

With their photo paintings, GOTT&GILZ join this long tradition of depicting naked women by men—keyword “male gaze”—and make this explicit with their references to Klimt, Schiele, Pollock, and others. This leads to reflexive outrage in some people.

Unlike the aforementioned art-historical references, however, GOTT&GILZ’s presumption does not lie in breaking with traditional forms of representation, but rather in quoting them: the past as an affront. The women in the pictures, but also the artists themselves, confidently display their desire, thus shamelessly and relentlessly confronting us with the constitution of our society and psyche, which is anchored in history.

Freedom is the keyword in GOTT&GILZ’s oeuvre: the freedom to be authentic and to express oneself without shame. Their subtly provocative play with aesthetic conventions and taboos not only enriches the art scene, but also sparks important discussions about gender roles, body image, and the right to sexual self-determination.
